There was still light in the Antara shopping center in Mexico City when four thieves committed a spectacular robbery that was recorded by several of the visitors. Dressed in caps and face masks, three subjects armed with sledgehammers have thrown themselves against the windows of the Berger jewelry store while a fourth, with a gun, made sure that no one approached. The mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mauricio Tabe, has confirmed on social networks that no injuries have been reported in the assault.

Hours later, the Secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC), Omar García Harfuch, announced the arrest of an alleged implicated in this assault, although he details that there are more implicated to be prosecuted.

At around 7:45 p.m., a group of thieves dispersed the customers who were near the Berger jewelry store, specializing in branded accessories, inside the Antara shopping center, in Polanco, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Mexico City. According to the images that the visitors have recorded, some of the stores above the jewelry store were still open, with their respective private security guards.

The thieves attacked the store window with sledgehammers, although, according to the recordings, only one of them managed to break the glass to get the items out. The attackers have not fired, according to security members interviewed by The universal, and they are presumed to have fled on a motorcycle after the robbery.

Last week, two people died in an assault at the southern bus station in Mexico City. Also in broad daylight, at two in the afternoon, a group of thieves tried to rob a securities van that was carrying cash from one of the businesses at the plant. While the company custodians introduced the cash into the truck, the thieves started shooting trying to get hold of the loot. Security personnel, who are usually armed, responded and chaos ensued at the station. Two of the robbers died and were wounded, a guard and a woman who was in the place.

In the first five months of 2023, more than 245,000 robberies were registered in Mexico, according to figures from the Executive Secretary of the Public Security System. Last year almost a million robberies were reached in the country. In Mexico, around 95% of crimes are not solved.
